A Trip Down Shark River Activity
Activity 1
What are some producers, consumers, and decomposers that live in the Florida Everglades?
Producers: Ringed Anemone, Bladderwort, White Water Lily, Spatterdock, Maidencane.
Consumers: Whooping Crane, Blue Heron, Egrets, Florida Panther, Deer, American Alligator, Bullsharks.
Decomposers: Fungi,
What do the consumers listed eat?
Whooping Cranes eat: any type of fish.
Great Blue Herons eat: apple snails.
Florida Panthers eat: deer and other mammals found in the area.
American Alligators eat: they have alligator holes where they keep their food and water source.
Bull sharks eat: anything, and any type of meat.
List the biotic and abiotic factors that you think will influence where the scientists will find bull sharks in the Everglades
Abiotic factors:
The abiotic factors that may determine where scientists may find bull sharks would be because of the water (salt water and fresh water), and the oxygen. (cold, hot, etc.)
Biotic Factors:
The biotic factors that may determine where scientists may find bull sharks would be because of the animals that live there because of their habitats. It matters because of the food that the bull sharks eat.
Activity 2
Do you think salinity is an important abiotic factor for bull sharks? Why or why not?
I think silinity is an important abiotic factor for bull sharks because it determines where the bull sharks are. And how many bull sharks are in that certain area.
Do you think temperature is an important abiotic factor for bull sharks? Why or why not?
Do you think dissolved oxygen content is an important abiotic factor for bull sharks? Why or why not?
Activity 3
Why do you think baby bull sharks live in the river and not in the ocean like other sharks do?
I think that baby bull sharks may live in the river and not in the ocean like other sharks do because the baby bull sharks are a different kind of shark that may adapt differently than normal sharks would in the ocean. Also there are less predators and once they grow up and adapt, they can go into the ocean with other sharks.
Activity 4
Are most bull sharks found where they can get the most food?
No, most bull sharks are found there isn't much food because there are lots of predators that live around where there is a lot of food.
Are fish an important biotic factor for bull sharks? Explain your answers.
Fish is an important biotic factor for bull sharks. But if they were to go where all the fish was, they would be around all of the predators that are after them.
Activity 5
Look at your bar graph in Activity 4 to see where the bull sharks were caught at these same three sites.
Do you think predators are an important biotic factor for bull sharks? Explain your answer.
I think predators are an important biotic factor for bull sharks because the predators feed on baby sharks so it really depends where the predators are to determine where they live.
Why do you think some bull sharks swim down to the mouth of the river?
I think some bull sharks swim down to the mouth of the river to get food because that's where all of the food usually is.
